Verandan, the new musical project of songwriter Ville Hopponen, celebrated the release of their self-titled debut EP on Saturday with an excellent show at bar loose in Helsinki.
Situated between the constraints of everyday life and an afternoon daydream, Hopponen’s songs are part social realism, part escapism and the band he’s gathered around him seem perfectly in tune with his musical language. Together they create a dizzying atmosphere with beautiful soaring melodies, wild guitar solos tearing through the soft landscape, a gracious bass and prominent keyboards and percussion all adding to the sedative, Lynchian mood.
