Finnish band Is This Really Me released a rather excellent 7″ last year entitled “Boxer”. The title track is a folk-tinged indie pop song with dark undertones and a rare dose of wit – by Finnish standards.
The lyrics employ a sense of humour that you don’t immediately connect with Finnish music. They have this in common with fellow Finnish indie poppers Cats On Fire, who have always remained consistent when it comes to letting the writing take as much room as the music.
“Boxer” is no short on drama, with grandiose arrangements consisting of piano, cello, acoustic guitar and minimal percussion enveloping the song. The mix of female and male vocals also add to the ceremonial feel of the song.
