“Music became a refuge from all sense of powerlessness and helplessness that I and many Syrian friends have felt.”
So says New York based singer-songwriter Rami, who is extending a hand of support to his native Syria through his music. In an attempt to raise awareness for the ongoing Syrian crisis, Rami began recording songs inspired by his homeland back in November of 2012. This resulted in a 4-song digital EP entitled Common Ground, which will be released on April 23.
The Syrian civil war, which began in 2011 as an uprising against President al-Assad, has claimed at least 70 000 lives. In a country that has been torn apart by war, Syrian people are currently in urgent need for help and resources. The escalating crisis has brought an imminent humanitarian catastrophe to the region. According to EU aid chief Kristalina Georgieva 4.3 million people have been internally displaced and nearly 1.4 million refugees in neighboring countries.
All proceeds from the sales of Common Ground will go to organizations helping Syrian refugees. It will be available through CD Baby and all major online digital music retailers worldwide.
